How Vicious Are They? By Iman Lababedi

Toronto’s finest, synth duo the Vicious Guns, sound like Soft Cell sans soul mixed with the cool vocals of a Human League chick. In other words, an eighties retro sound but not exactly. So not exactly Sid Vicious but they don’t hit you with a flower either.

Jennie and Richie Vicious have been a bands before, band whose names you know like the Von Blondies, but they have that palpable je ne sais fucking quoi here: it is a sexy beats plus synth which seems to be moving forward and backwards at the same time.

The Vicious Guns EP (the album is out now) is just about flawless and for four songs they can do no wrong, the gorgeous ballad “Migraine” even includes (shock horror) guitar. Here the production sores into a mini Spectorish wall of sound.

Great stuff.

Anyway, the Vicious Guns are in town for the next two days so if you’re in town, you might wanna catch em before they break big which they well could.
