Hear Ye: What Rock nyc Is Listening To 2-22-13

1. Flashbacks, Memories And Dreams – The Virgins – To note that these nyc Strokes meets Stones with a disco beat haven't made the follow up to "Rich Girl" of your dreams goes without saying. But it might also be worth noting that they have managed a superior slice of dance rock with a killer bass lick. Unfortunately, it took five years so who knows where the audience is?  – Grade: B+

2. 3AM – Kate Nash – If we don't have Lily Allen, rather Kate Nash than Florence Welch or maybe I mean Eliza Doolittle. Just about flawless pop song circa 2006 – Grade: A-

3. Heaps Of Sheeps – Robert Wyatt – Keven Ayers just died and I will get to the Soft Machine at some point, but till then, here is a Wyatt draming about mobility – Grade: A+

4. A Tattered Line Of String – I thought it was a tattered line of String at first. No such luck – Grade: C

5. Let The Day Begin – Black Rebel  Motorcycle Club – I coulda sworn these rockers guys were from Wales – Grade: B

6. Demon To Lean On – Wavves – Pretty good midtempo song but, er, it is actually a song with a structure and melody and all that good stuff – Grade: B+

7. Greed – Buckcherry – This is the new album cooling down to room temperature – Grade: B

8. Ecstasy – Iceage – This weeks buzz band is really pretty good, nicely obstreperous hard rock – Grade: B+

9. Mermaids – Nick Cave And The Bad Seed – I guess this is the sorta song the Post weren't thrilled with… Grade: C

10. Very Large Green Triangles – Matmos – Why do experimental bands always have Greek sounding names? This is about telepathy, and I like it a lot, it kinda twinkles – Grade: B+
