Hear Ye: 1-17-13

1. Slide – Jake Bugg – What Jake can do it, which isn’t at first visible, is nail a metaphor. Here he compares a bad romance with sliding on a frozen sea. Not a bad concept. On stage, this was the highlight of his show. A powerful encore with the sort of vocal, rich and full of feeling, he didn’t seem to bother with the rest of the night – Grade: B+

 2. Suit And Tie – Justin Timberlake – It isn’t that this disco is bad, it is that it isn’t very much – Grade: B

 3. Dear Darlin’ – Olly Murs – Average ballad but no less than an average ballad – Grade: B

4.  State Of Grace (Acoustic) – Taylor Swift – The heart of the matter, precisely what was on her mind plus maybe her best vocal – Grade: A

5. Electric Fever – Free Energy – A giant leap for power pop, this is what Bay City Rollers might sound like covering Big Star – Grade: A-

6. Here We Go – Christopher Owens – Another travelling song and a smart one – Grade: A-

7. Stupid Things – Yo La Tengo – Maybe the best of their excellent new collection of songs for unswinging couples – Grade: A

8. 1Train – A$AP Rocky – He can certainly rap and even if he has nothing much to say, cheering success with a line like "Anything is better than that 1train" is pretty fucking funny – Grade: A-

9.  Some Nights – Kidz Bop Kids – They've zip to add to this one – Grade: C

10. Come Down The Coast – Camper Van Beethoven – Pretty, lull classic rock. Like Yom Petty without the Southern stuff – Grade: B
