The Tower Records on Broadway and West 4th was one of my fave hangouts in the city. Back in the day I would go on album buying marches from the HMV on West 77th all the way to Tower.
Just spend the day buying albums.
That doesn’t happen any more and today the Tower is a “Wired” -as in the tech geek mag, outlet, for cool gadgets and cooler parties. Here a 3D TV, there an electronically heated coat! No prices on anything which is just as well.
Wednesday night was Girlie Action’s Christmas party. Girlie Action is an excellent PR company who rep everyone from LCD Soundsystem to Afrobeta, and they know how to throw a party. I speak to Spencer Scanlon and folkie Christopher Paul Stelling for a minute. The rest of the night is all Heineken Beer, white wine, cupcakes and soul man Gordon Voidwell who I missed because -well, because I am a socially inadequate fuckface who can’t take parties if you paid him cash money.
I spend the well over fifteen minutes I was there staring at DJ Nomi Ruiz of Jessica 6…
—that is till she looked at me from under her large hat and scared me off.
I wasn’t perving out. No, wait, I was perving out but that wasn’t the only reason I was staring at her.
1) I love her work with Jessica 6
2) I worship her song “Scarred Live”
And
3) What the fuck is she doing?
Have a look at the pix up there? Whatever happened to two turntables and a microphone. This is all digital doo dah days with Nomi fading between heavy heavy bass house with a movement of her thumb so fast and smooth and just weird I can’t figure out how she knows what is where. Where is the screen that tells her what’s playing. I was thinking of filming and posting it but cowarded out at the last minute!!
So from the DJ saving your life it is a just a short step to DJ as mission control manager. Anybody else would look like el nerd del nerdo. Nomi looks kinda hot.
So I watch in amazement till she gives me the killer look and I run off into the cold night air.
Thanks, Girlie Action. Merry Christmas.
