I’ve been sick of Paramore for a coupla years, really ever since a terrible set at Summerstage got my back up and the latest album gave me zero reason to change my mind. Sure Hayley Williams is a cutie but what the fuck do i care. Being a cutie doesn’t matter if the music sux, neither does being friends with Gwen Stefani and neither does having one great song, “For A Pessimist, I’m Really Optimistic” and one near great song “Misery Business”.
But after ragging on Dirty Projectors for months after their crap performance on Hall at Williamsburg it only took a superb cover of Dylan’s “Dark Eyes” to turn me round again.
And after truly not liking Paramore since something like August 2008, it only took an awesome cover by Hayley Williams of “Bad Romance” to wonder if maybe I overeacted a little!!
The truth is, a bad live performance will turn me off a band faster than a bad album. If they aren’t cutting it live than nothing is working at all in my books.
Yet Williams, putting her hair in a bun while sitting alone at a piano gives a very convincing performance as a serious woman quite in control of her sound and herself. And, without wishing to get all Jonah Weiner on her ass, she really is a cutie.
