I've found a new band to love, which is so exciting because I can't get enough of their music. OK, so maybe our guy Henry Sins discovered (and reviewed) them first, but hey, I'm now on board.
I'd heard of fun. before, but I just hadn't taken the time to give them a listen. I was intrigued ever since I heard the single that they did with Panic! At The Disco titled "C'mon". I decided to check out their album Some Nights.
fun. is a 3 piece New York based group, which could be simply categorized as 'indie rock'. There's really no genre you can put them in, simply because they're so unique.
The intro is brilliant. The singer's voice is so gorgeous and is so dynamic. At first I didn't like it, but it's most certainly grown on me. The song has so much dimension that I had to listen to it a few times to take it all in. It's so well done, and a brilliant way to open up a record.
"Some Nights" is a fantastic tune. I love the harmonies; it's so warm and deep and gorgeous that I can't stop listening to it. The harmonies are truly mind-blowing. The part that is spoken, "So this is it? I sold my soul for this? Washed my hands of that for this? I miss my mom and dad for this?" gets to me every time. It's so beautiful. The guitarist is also ridiculously talented, and that's really well-shown in this tune. It's really unique and I love it.
The single, "We Are Young", I didn't like at first. However now whenever I hear it, I instantly sing as loud as I possibly can and flail around like an idiot. It's so good! There is no other way to describe it. It's totally one-of-a-kind, and I get that wonderful feeling of "I just have to drop everything to hear it or I'll miss my favourite line", which is rare. Of course it's the single- it's wonderful.
The song that totally stands out on the album is "Why Am I The One". However, I really love it. The singer's voice is what really draws me in, and the beautiful symphony backing it up is what seals the deal. It's a really mellow tune, but still packs enough of a punch to keep me listening. But the vocals definitely bring this song out of the "great" category and bring it straight up to "perfection".
I'm so glad I finally gave fun. a chance, because I was totally missing out.
Don't you dare miss out any longer:
