Free Shows 2011 -by Alyson Camus

My Monday nights are gonna be busy in January! In LA, many clubs have a free Monday residency formula, and it’s a great way to see bands without spending any money. And it looks like 2011 will start like a fanfare:

At Spaceland (or is it the Satellite now?), The Belle Brigade is playing every Monday. I saw them very recently at the Echo, and the folk-rock brother-sister duo just took the public by surprise. Their sweet harmonies, and clapping charming tunes are a delight.
Just go to their website to download ‘Sweet Louise’ for free, we’ll know what I am talking about:

At the Bootleg theater, Grouplove is having a free show every Monday! I saw them at the Troubadour this summer, and they stunned me by their stage energy, their big sound and their… youth! Their songs are full of vocal harmonies, which soon bloom into chorus-anthems, a la Arcade Fire,… I know that must be a tendency these days, but they are really excellent at building a bright and exuberant joyous sound. They met in Greece, live in LA and have opened for Florence and the Machine in LA, so they must be that good.

At the Echo, Cannoneers have a free Monday residency, and if I don’t know anything about the band, which recently formed in 2009, the songs posted on their myspace infuse enough 70’s inspired rock ’n’ roll to get me interested in knowing more about them.http://www.myspace.com/cannoneersofthenewcommand

And, as if free Mondays were not enough, there is also a free Tuesday residency at LaBrie’s with the Monolators, the pop-punk dynamic band fronted by husband and wife Eli and Mary Chartkoff. I also saw them earlier this year at Pehrspace, and the live goofy punk treatment given to their 50-60’s pop-rock inspired music was a real joy. Also, these guys know how to dress-up!
Just listen to ‘Silver cities’, or ‘Don’t dance’ here:

2011 is looking promising!
