Free Energy’s Free Energy: What I Am Listening To Right This Minute by Alyson Camus

The ‘Free Energy’ single of the Philadelphia band of the same name has a beginning that reminds me a Weezer song (think about a slower ‘Troublemaker’, not the songs of the upcoming album that apparently suck), then it morphs into some kind of classic post-glam 70’s rock and roll, more Thin Lizzy than Led Zeppelin, less bluesy than Lynyrd Skynyrd, with definitively some Tom Petty flavor, never heavy with a lot of electric guitar solos, and even cowbells.

The track is full of optimistic energy, well it’s called ‘Free energy’ and it will make you visualize plenty of it, with its power chords, its guitar hooks synchronized with drum beats. I see it as the kind of track you would obligatory play very loud, an air-guitar-riffs-filled anthem, heard at a Kids-are-all-right party.

And these kids are certainly all right with lyrics like ‘We are young and still alive/now the time is on our side/right now, we’ll make it right now/when every thought is electrical/right now, we’ll make it right now/the dream is coming’.

The band was formed by Paul Sprangers and Scott Wells after the breakup of their indie band Hockey Night, and after recruiting 3 other members (Evan Wells, Geoff Bucknam, and Nick Shuminsky), they listened to a lot of classic rock, recorded a few demos and got signed by New-York DFA, James Murphy’s (LCD Soundsystem) label who is obviously a fan. James was even the producer for ‘Stuck on Nothing’, their 2010 album which features the song ‘Free Energy’ as its first track.

Free Energy was declared one of the best new bands of 2010 by Rolling Stone magazine (and they are sometimes right), but can you still call it indie rock when it sounds like classic rock?

They are touring with rock nyc favorite Titus Andronicus in September, so it is another excellent reason to go to see them:
