Helen Bach can’t stand Frankie Rose (or the Outs for that matter) but she might be able to get her ears around this terrific cover of the Linda Ronstadt chestnut, “You’re No Good”.
Ronstandt owns it (though it was written by Dee Dee Warwick) and Costello, smoking the peace pipe with Linda after he dismissed her great covers of “Alison” and “Girl’s Talk” with a snide comment, covered it to great effect circa Brutal Youth.
Frankie doesn’t sound like either. She detonates the song in full blown Vivian’s Girl meets early Patti Smith plus trademark harmonies on the chorus. It sounds great and it’s free on (yes, that’s where I am today) Stereogum.
