A year after starting rock nyc, I found myself in Chapel Hill North Carolina covering Odessa's own first year anniversary. I wrote this about the incredible Shit Horse at the time: "It's nearing the witching hour and a topless girl wearing a horses head, tights, men’s underwear and sneakers and drenched with beer is frugging near the stage to Shit Horse, while Odessa Records owner Paul Finn dances with wild abandon and Shit Horses’s lead singer Danny Mason is twirling center stage before settling back into a semi-improvissed rant about love and death “Twelve Horses”
Yep. 2010, there was a year for you.
I started a calender of gigs I was getting to that year and have mainatined it ever since (and still double book all the time). Here is how April 201 – 2012 looked like and 2013 looks like:
4-1-10 – The Kissaway Trial – Mercury Lounge A modern Swedish Joy Division buzz – B+
4-3-10 Girls – Webster Hall – Girls – Dum Dum Girls opened, both bands were rubbish and Chris Owens compared me to a barking dog – C-
4-9-10 – Rocket Summer – Highline Ballroom (I think) – Excellent classic rocker with heart – B+
4-17-10 – Hold Steady – Bowery Ballroom – Superb set in a relatively small forum, they would suck 5 months later at the Beacon – A
4-23-10 – Odessa Records Party – Night Lights – Wesley Wolf, Shit Horse… unreal – A
4-24-10 – And I am still waiting for the album – B+
4-27-10 – Hole – T5 – Huge disappointment – C
4-1-11 – The Strokes – MSG – Costello blew em off stage – B
4-2-11 – LCD Soundsystem – MSG – Farewell and amen – A
4-5-11 – Marsha Ambrose – Irving Plaza – Very good r&b gal – B+
4-13-11 – TV On The Radio – Radio City – Yeah, kinda sucked – B-
4-14-11 – Christopher Paul Stelling – Muse And Music – This was fun, I interviewed Chris between songs – B+
4-15-11 – Black Veil Brides – Gramercy Theater – The band was peaking – B+
4-23-11 – Lady Gaga – Prudential – A terrible, terrible set. She would be much better the next time I saw her – C-
4-6-12 – Bruce Springsteen – MSG – Pushing a bad album too too hard – B
4-11-12 – Pulp – Radio City – You can't go home again – B
4-28-12 – Kathleen Edwards – Webster Hall (I think) – Excellent and bloody minded set – B+
4-30-12 – The Shins – T6 – Most boring band ever.
