Mitch Welling is an intensely talented artist. I look up to his work, and there’s not a thing he does that’s disappointing or subpar. He has a lovely singing voice, a knack for stinging lyrics, and a fantastic photographic eye. He posted a video on his YouTube channel, called, “i love you, i need you, i miss you” and it’s one of the most stunning things he’s released yet.
First off, the cinematography is lovely. It’s stark and simple but the colors match the mood perfectly and it’s visually representative of the mood of the song. His words are gut-wrenching, and heartbreaking. “Since you’ve been gone, I’ve stayed up ’till dawn, just sitting and growing a beard. I’ll shave it off, and start again, so I’ll look the same as when you left.”
The droning noises behind his words fit perfectly. It captures the white noise feeling of loss, how it envelops all around you and threatens to be all you hear. It’s sampled from a live recording of New Year’s Kiss by Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, and was practically made for something like this.
“Since you’ve been gone, I’ve written a few songs. None of them say what I want to say- ‘I love you, I need you, I miss you..When you get home, I’d like to kiss you and fix this and fix this and fix this…'” Listening to this forces goosebumps, an empty dropping stomach, a tightness in your lungs. It’s absolute poetry.
This is most definitely the most impressive thing Mitch has done in a while. Art may never come from happiness, but his art is inspiring and addicting.
