In the press release announcing the drop date of Modern Hut’s Generic Treasure, Joe Steinhardt mentions he has been working on it for six years. And Joe has sent me numerous demos and even songs that never made the cut for years and years now and so while I might disagree that it needed that long to perfect (all versions sounded great to me), if that’s what took to release what amounts to the single most consistently excellent album of the year, well, so be it.
Here is the track list. It is magic, not a bad song in the bunch, not a good song. They are all great. And I am glad he plays it so straight, if he sweetened anything it would be too overpowering:
1. Mid Tempo
2. Just Pray
3. History
4. Life
5. Heart
6. Time
7. Louis St
8. America
9. Gone
10. Wrong
11. Moving On
The album will be released on August 6thh by Don Giovanni Records and Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females produced it like nothing she has ever performed on! PS They had an awesome cover art a couple of years ago, maybe they can use it on the back of the album cover.
In discussing what I consider one of the best songs “History”, I was a little disappointed that Steinhardt’s reasons for writing it were a little narrow; it is a “disillusioned criticism of the music industry”. I thought it was a disillusioned criticism of history. Be that as it may, it is awesome and you can hear it here (ps Joe just told me that wasn’t his opinion of the song, that was the guy who wrote the press release):
