(Editor's Note: rock nyc can run but it can't hide from the profigeration of fashion in the music buisiness. With Mary Magpie's post about musicians and their clothing line, we are invite you to Look Sharpp on a weekly basis with this brand new column)
A lot of times, music and fashion go hand in hand. Whether it's an Urban Outfitters version of a Joy Division tee or Trash and Vaudeville selling Bowie tanks, you can't walk down the street without seeing some band-influenced garb.
Also, there are musicians who advertise their own personal clothing lines on the internet and through social networking. Some of them don’t even know anything about fashion themselves, and use their fame to get people to buy stuff. However, there are multiple clothing lines that are worthwhile and have cute clothes that aren’t all about promoting the musician, and pumping their ego. Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon has Drop Dead Clothing- an overpriced but painstakingly adorable array of hoodies, tees, and bottoms. Pete Wentz, who used to be the bassist for Fall Out Boy, has Clandestine Industries- the iconic batheart was on Wentz's bass, and I remember owning multiple pieces from this line back when I was in love with FOB.
Two of the most popular lines by musicians is Avril Lavigne's Abbey Dawn and Gwen Stefani's LAMB- she even has her own fragrances.
As cool as these things are, what sucks is when you go to their concerts, you can only buy the band's shirts and the band's accessories. At least at old FOB shows there would be a shirt or two, and at some BMTH shows they have other merch. Still, I think that the musicians in bands should be able to have a separate table to make their clothes tangibly accessible.
The musicians who create clothing lines just need another creative outlet, or are just looking to make more money. Regardless, some of their clothes are flippin’ cute.
