Fascinating post on Slate about the creator of a computer softward known by the acronym Emmy (“Experiments in Musical Intelligence.”) Howell (creator/composer David Cope’s grandfather’s name) which makes music an untrained ear can NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE FROM ORIGINAL BACH!!
According to Slate: “Audiences have been moved to tears by melodies created by algorithms”. Cope claims that it is not that computers can write like people it is that people can write like computers and certainly, the conection between composing and mathematics is well documentated.
Still the implications for what it is to be human, or a musician (which is not the same thing at al) for that matter are huge though I’m not sure what you are. Our dealings with artificial intelligence is comparable to our dealings with other life forms intelligence. In a sentence: the more we do so, the less unique we appear.
With the computers the answer might be, well, we invented it, which is like saying that because Einstein’s Daddy invented Einstein, Einstein’s daddy was also a genius.
A bit off point so go to slate and read the post and decide for yourself.
