Evanescence Debut at # 1: Further Proof The Charts Aren't What They Were

So Evanescence's god help us is gonna enter the charts at # 1 toay. What does this mean? I nmean, in the grance cheme of success and failure?

In a worl where selling 200K copies, even less, can make you a star, the fast answer is not much.

The more difficult answer is, if we don't use sales to project winners and losers, what do we use. And if we do and the numbers are anemic, what are we proving? It isn't unkike Television. Back in the day you could easily buy a 5 rating in daytime, now you can't get a 1.5. Why? Too many choices.

The same with the charts, too many ways to get music. There is a generation growing up who have never paid for recorded music. Ownership means something different to them. They don't have mp3s, they don't have record collections, they have a youtube account and keep their music their for free -and can access it easy on their iPhones.

For them, nothing for Spotify is too much.

As for Evanescence? They still suck.
