Evan Voytas at the Echo on Monday December 20th: Chillwave? -by Alyson Camus

The free night at the echo (actually there was another band, Rumspringa, earlier, that I missed) began with the synth-loaded music of Evan Voytas, a young songwriter, who may first surprise you by his high-pitched, falsetto Prince-like voice.
He played on guitar surrounded by two elevated synths, plus a beat machine, which were giving a 70’s-80’s disco-pop feeling to his songs. People were starting dancing along his smooth synth loops and hard beats… is it what they call chillwave?

I cannot really explain why, but he kept reminding me Ariel Pink, whom I have seen recently, but without the weirdness of Ariel (yeah, there is no comparison there, and Pink is strangely more confident on stage despite his eccentric behavior) and probably with more formulaic songs (I mean Pink is more all over the place), but still there was some of that optimistic feeling.

Evan Voytas has recently released an EP, ‘Tomorrow Night We’ll Go Anywhere’, now available digitally via Cascine.
