Emek Golan, who goes under the only name of Emek, has made a lot of them, and he has been described as ‘a savior of rock’ n’ roll’. Looking at some of his art, full of intricate hand-painted details and complicated compositions of nature, skeletons and industrial contraptions, varying from humoristic social commentary to total fantasy, it is easy to understand why people are fascinated by it and buy that stuff which can be as psychedelic as some of the music he gets inspired from.
He was about to sign his new book ‘Collected Works of Aaarght, at Mr Musichead Gallery, on Sunset boulevard, yesterday night, as I was walking from the Quincy Jones’ Q&A at the Guitar Center, strangely very close by.
Emek has worked for tons of artists: Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Eryka Badu, Bright Eyes, Siouxsie Sioux, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Beastie Boys, Bob Marley Paul Simon, Grateful Dead, Marilyn Manson, The Decemberists, The Flaming Lips, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Built to Spill, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, Radiohead, Weezer, Rage Against the Machine, Sex Pistols, Mars Volta, Sigur Ros, Garbage, The White Stripes, Willie Nelson, The Strokes, PJ Harvey, Wilco, to name only a few!! And he has even made some posters for the almost only record store standing in town, Amoeba music.
