Elvis Costello spent time talking to Spinner when he should have come over my house so I could stare at him. I think that would sorta scare him really so perhaps he made the right choice.
The topic came up of ‘kids today’, not really but more about Costello’s thoughts on new bands of today.
Seems he feels they have no reason to be dull. Pretty accurate yet simplistic.
Having so many genres and styles to sample, should provide a more diverse sound.
Hmm, blending of styles are something that either works or not. In the case of Costello I hate the whole twangy country route he dabbled in.
What I find contradictory is this quote
“You get stuck in any one church for too long, it’s probably not gonna be healthy for the way you move music forward. [But] you constantly see bands make success and then five minutes after they’ve made that success they want to change it in some way, which is legitimate to them, but it takes a little trust on the part of the listener. Radiohead, there’s a good example: They had some big hits and then they made records that are very crushed and use a lot of sonics that come from dance music, and people were horrified when those records came out first. Now you listen to them and they sound great.”
Is that not what Elvis did and does?
Is he saying stick with what works? If so he has not headed his own words
Is this not one of the most brow furrowing statements ever?
I’ll blame Spinner, but the truth is Mr Costello (with all due respect) makes no sense at all. Even My Chemical Romance changes genres on a dime. Growing chaining evolving happens. A band will either lose fans gain fans or change fans.
That’s life- that’s called not being stagnant.
Right?
November 2 isn’t far away.. don’t forget his new CD National Ransom.
