Elvis Costello Brings Back The Spectacular Spinning Wheel -by Iman Lababedi

Being a lowly paid writer at the time, I could barely afford to pay for one night of Costello’s five nights on Broadway in 1987, and I couldn’t get his PR to pony up a tix, so I thought and thought and here were the October choices:
21 w./Attractions New York City(NY), Broadway Theatre
22 w./Confederates New York City(NY), Broadway Theatre w./T-Bone Burnett
23 w./Confederates New York City(NY), Broadway Theatre
24 w./Attractions New York City(NY), Broadway Theatre w./Buster Poindexter
25 w./Attractions New York City(NY), Broadway Theatre

I went with the 23rd because a) it wasn’t sold out when I tried to get a tix and more important b) he was playing King Of America -and I was obsessed with the album at the time!

If I had gone with the 25th, idda got to see the Spectacular Spinning Songbook!! A brilliant idea where Costello took a Wheel of Fortune and put titles of his songs in the slots, had an audience member spin it and he and the band played whatever song it landed on.

Yeah, a great idea in 1987.

In 2011? Costello is resurrecting the concept with 40 song slots on the spinner. If there are 40 song slots, maybe half a years worth of Costello material, watcha gonna put on? The decision as to what song to put on is so in the hands of Costello, and 40 songs such a drop in the bucket, the spinning has become meaningless. “Episode Of Blonde” followed by “Sneaky Feelings”… Ok but point being? Covers? Costello always performs covers. Obscurities? You mean his entire output in the 21st century?

Perhaps, if Costello was using a computer and putting his entire catalogue up -that might be a fucking wild night out. There is no way he can remember em all, maybe he’d stumble, maybe say no we can’t do it. But FORTY SONGS???

Will I go? Of course, I loathed National Ransom and I am still a fan and will still see him whenever he’s in town.
