The Elliott Smith Story: On And Off The Record by Iman Lababedi

This has never been about GETTING Jennifer Chiba though if she did nothing wrong why did she stop talking to the police? It is about closing the case once and for  all on Smith’s death.

But, after speaking off the record to journalist Liam Gowing, I am much closer to believing Elliott killed himself.

But that isn’t the point.

If he killed himself, let the LAPD admit their deeply flawed investigation and state he killed himself and we can all go back to our lives.

And if he didn’t, find out what happened that day.

Liam is a nice fellow, but as writers, myself (and Alyson) having a clearer idea as to what happened doesn’t help any one if we can’t post it.

So after speaking to Liam I asked him to speak to Alyson on record and that I would not tell her what I know.

Liam thought about it for a week and said no. He did speak with her for over two hours off the record.

So now we are stuck with not being able to share our knowledge with our readers.

Even if the reply is “no comment” or “i know but I can’t say” -even that would be preferable then for rock nyc to find itself unable to share information with their readers.

On the other hand, and despite my completely believing that everything Liam told us is what he wholeheartedly believes, I don’t share his faith in Chiba.

And even if I did…

The story of Elliott Smith is about an open case and closing it, not Chiba’s character or lack thereof.

It is not about me and him and Jennifer. It is about what our FB group says it is about: Justice For Elliott Smith.

And so Liam and rock nyc join a long list of people who have failed Elliot and  failed you. Why? to protect people who don’t deserve protecting.

This stinks…

And Alyson is working on her continuing reviews of every song.

And Alyson doesn’t think we should post the questions we were gonna ask Liam because she knows the answers now though she can’t share them. I say they should be posted -so we are debating it.
