Ducktails Is Not A Disney Cartoon… So What IS It? By Iman Lababedi

his biz is so fucking weird it is just about impossible to keep up with.
Remember real estate: sorta countryfied, psychedelic indie rock? I reviewed their gig at the Guggenheim last year.
The lead singer is Matthew Mondanile, and he is one weird cat who sometimes goes by the name of Ducktails and has a new album Ducktails III: Ducktails III: Arcade Dynamics. Somebody dubbed it “part of the “hypnagogic pop” movement”. yeah, the dumber the name the worse the music is my rule of thumb but this piece of rural whimsy is pretty pretty in a low fi way: it sounds like the solo is on a slide guitar, but why would that be?
Thie mp3 was sent to me from Forcefield PR who write the best PR crap around. Sometimes it is is better than the music they’re pushing, though “Matt spends his time either touring or recording in the basement of his parent’s house and partying in the city.” is about as funny a line as I’ve read (or written in awhile).
I love “Hamilton Road” -I love Real Estate as well but more live than recorded. Ooooh, check out this bit of info!!!
“At 22 he started releasing his own cassette albums at first living in Northampton, MA. His first 7 inch came out on Breaking World Records followed by a string of LP’s, Cassettes, and CD’s on small independent likeminded labels like Not Not Fun, Olde English Spelling Bee, Release the Bats, Arbor, Goaty Tapes etc”
I’m telling you folks, it’s a brave new world out their.
Anyway, I love it and I’ve sent it to Mary who should knock Mathew back down to size soon enough.
The album is due sometime in the Fall.
