I’ve been listening to Pavement quite a bit this week in anticipation of Friday’s gig at Summerstage and call me crazy call me what you will… do they kinda suck?
All three of their first three albums have great moments, CR2 has maybe more than great moments but geez a lotta this sounds like half written out of tune weirdness. And when they did get around to taking themselves seriously, say the Brighten The Corners album, they sucked even worse.
Damn, even the good songs on that were pretty crappy.
There were no good songs on the dreadful Terror Twilight and worse? Of the three times I saw em live, they were great once and sucked the following two times.
And now, folks, after Malkmus found himself entirely incapable of making any fans except rock journos and pathetic meaningless dribbling Pitchfork who liked pretending Malkmus liked them (which he didn’t) and college kids with nothing to do on a Tuesday night except catch his show in the hope he sings “Range Life”, has hit the nostalgia circuit for a year where he ran into Leonard Cohen from time to time and they compared second mortgage payments.
In other words: I’ll tell you after the show whether Pavement suck or not.
