Last night I went to my first ever Broadway musical, American Idiot.
Its based off the mega-album of the same name by Green Day. I walked
out of the St. James Theater with two conclusions: One, musicals just
aren’t for me, and two, American Idiot is actually a brilliant pop
album.
Musicals probably do it for a lot of people; I’m just not one of them.
I do think, however, that if I were to like any musical it would
probably be this one. Because it was a Broadway production, all the
actors were really talented and some of the set stuff was awesome (like
when one of the injured soldiers went airborne with the masked Muslim
woman and danced while suspended in air for ten minutes). The whole
thing was actually pretty cool the more I think about it.
My biggest impression of the night, however, was about the music of
American Idiot. As someone who counts Green Day’s Dookie as one my
three most listened to albums and the one album when I was nine that
really made me love music, I never really gave new Green Day,
specifically American Idiot, a chance. Props to this musical, because I
went home last night and put on that album and I definitely gained a new
appreciation for it. As far as pop rock albums go, it really is about
as good as it gets.
So thanks Iman for blessing me with my first Broadway Musical. It may
be my last (maybe not, you never know), but I’m glad I got to see what
all the hype is about.
