If this was 1995, rock nyc would be scooping the world on this story!
Morrissey opened for David Bowie on Bowie's 1995 Outsider tour.
And then Morrissey quit the tour!
Why?
Because Morrissey was being forced to perform a cover of a Bowie song during his set on the tour and didn't want to do it! "David Bowie is a business" Morrissey claimed in 2004, to Jonathan Ross the UK TV talking head. He got sick of "worshipping at the alter of Bowie".
Around the same time, Morrissey would tell GQ: "(He is) not the person he was. He is no longer David Bowie at all. Now he gives people what he thinks will make them happy, and they're yawning their heads off. And by doing that, he is not relevant. He was only relevant by accident."
Wow… I think that's pushing it even for 2004.
In the end, I don't think it is too great stretch to claim that the Smiths were hugely influenced by Bowie and the entire glam move. To claim, as Morrissey does, that Bowie boils down to great outfits circa Ziggy Stardust isn't arrogant, it is stupid.
