I’m pretty sure its safe to say Iman and I are hopelessly addicted to live music. How many times we say to each other ‘omg its been 4 nights since Ive seen a show’, he and I are like crack addicts shuddering on the floor til our next fix.
We see shows that suck. We see greatness but even if we bolt a show early we were there we felt the vibe and we go on.
Last night I saw a band that was so bad I actually texted the boss that I was going to die. I honestly didn’t think I could make it to Minus the Bear. Everest was so bad they made my brain bleed. They were the anti Bach. The reason I went to the dark side so to speak. I don’t want to bash them because everyone has a fan, and its OK for me to dislike them but its for a point that I mention the repulsion.
Lets talk about the between sets recorded music.
From what I know, the band up next chooses the ‘warm up’ music being played at the sound board. I mention it often cuz its so interesting to me. Example Jay Z preceding Devil Wears Prada, or Miley Cirus preceding Saosin….
WTF?
Now is it to get the crowd pumped to sing along? Everything sounds better over club or arena speakers, all bassy and sexy. Yeah Ive toe tapped to unmentionables just cuz it was familiar and sounded fun.
Last night was THE BEST between set music of all time. Its actually totally turned my ear (for the moment) back to the 70s.
I was facebooking out a conversation with my good pal JCM during it. So stoked to hear “Jungle Boogie” that I became obsessed with remembering who the performer was (Kool and the Gang), poor Iman trying to watch the Yankees game gets such random texts from me “who sings jungle boogie?”, ‘no idea google it”… see! the brush off.
Anyway, the music that moves us before our heroes arrive are a great indication of whats coming up even if the genre is nothing similar. Its a snapshot of who they are. I hope. Cuz Minus The Bear had ‘Strawberry Letter 22”.. how fucking cool is THAT!??? So as I stood there sweating my ass off after absolute hell, the recorded music lifted my mood, got me psyched, made me smiled and like a palette cleansing I stepped into the main act clear headed excited and happy.
Thank God.
The sad part about this is its going to be 6 days til my next show We Came As Romans…. someone hold me down.
