Curioser And Curioser At The Echo Park Curiosity Shop Amd Art Gallery -by Alyson Camus

The Echo Curio is this strange little shop/Art gallery in Echo Park selling paintings and curious objects of all kinds, promoting local and international artists. The place is also regularly hosting music shows for a very cheap price, usually $5, and when checking their blog recently, I have found this:

We still love you all but sadly we’ll be doing it from our respective homes for the near future…. We’ll know more on Monday when we visit the LAPD and start signing forms and paying dough… hopefully it will only be a short time before we’re back up and rocking your faces…. but one never knows….

it does shake my faith in our protectors when they shut a perfectly sane and awesome show down right as someone is lighting a birthday cake and the entire room is singing happy birthday.  funny world!

see you soon.. sorry to our lovely artists and bands.. more on this as it develops.

So the LAPD shut down the place!? What is the crime they have committed? Apparently they were missing a few permits, especially the one allowing live music, and I did not know there was such a permit. So far all their shows have been canceled.

In August, after a visit from the LAPD vice squad, Echo Curio was already forced to prohibit alcohol during musical performances following complaints from neighbors.

LA is a large city, and you would imagine the LAPD would have better things to do than harassing a small place like this one, which is trying to do good things for the Silver Lake and Echo Park community.

The Echo Curio owners said they went to the police commissioner on Monday and have now to wait till Oct 18 to fill out their application for the license. This really sucks, I hope they will get it.
