I got a text from Marie Lynn “I”M OBSESSED WITH ‘WHITE SKY’ though I’ve heard them do it better live”. Contra was released on Itunes today at midnight though, thanks Mary, I got it off Amazon the day before for $3.99.
Whatever the price, it’s worth it. In 2008 I got their first album in January and it was still in my top ten at the end of the year and Contra is better. You heard me, better. A just about flawless examination of love and class wars among the upper class that loses non of its World sound while adding well arranged strings.
It is more downbeat, more mature, out of the colleges and into the streets of Manhattan. And although I find the lyric obscure still much like the earlier “A-Punk” , or existential art, it makes sense as word spashes that seem to be telling a story while withholding information.
If you don’t get Contra you won’t grasp 2010 in music. You won’t know what we’re talking about. STart with the gorgeous “Taxi Cab”
