The Chapin Sisters At The Living Room, Monday August 2nd, 2010: Very Nice, Ladies by Woody Fuller

Some dresses are red,
And others are blue,
The Chaplin Sisters each wore one,
their music was good too.

Days after Aluyson caught them at the echoplex on the Echoplex, I followed the Chapin Sisters last night on the East Coast. They hit the stage bright and early at 7 o’clock, Lily and Abigail, ( decked out in splendid red and blue polyester dresses, respectively), of The Chaplin Sisters put on quite the performance at the quaint Living Room on the Lower East Side.
They began their show with a little A Capella rift, just the two of them, their different sounding voices were harmonizing and meshing together ever so beautifully; they must be related or something. Then for numero 2, they broke out their guitars, and belted some really amazing vocals out to all in attendance, honestly giving me the chills for a brief second. Nothing too hard or fast, a very slow tempo but accompanied by really great vocals.
I personally do not know this sort of music well enough to even try and compare them to anyone else, but I will obviously try anyway. I get a Janis Joplin feel from them, with a mix of some folk, and just a touch of pop.
Then they broke into one of their best songs of the night, covering Britney Spear’s “Toxic.” They put a much different spin on it however, giving it a very eerie and dark makeover. I felt they made it sexier than Mrs. Spears version, who I haven’t even thought sexy since she was asking me to hit her baby one more time.
Did one more cover to a Doc Watson song, folk as you can get, I felt as if i was in the movie ‘O Brother where art tho?’. Banjo’s sure are cool though.
But not even close to as cool as a humongous stand-up Bass, those puppies are mega rad. The Chaplin’s had their friend Richard Giddens, mo hawk and all, strumming on his stand-up Bass, along with Jesse Lee, of Gang Gang Dance, on drums for the second half of their show.
Stand up bass guitars are so cool, that even Owen Haddow, from my high school, would instantly jump to a perfect 10 on the cool meter, just by standing near one.
Anywho, so with the addition to drums and that kick ass bass they really picked up their pace and started to rock a bit more for the second half of the show.
The last two songs they played for us were, with ‘Toxic,’ the best of the evening. They did one about life in LA, cant recall the name, and finished strong with “Digging a Hole”, which not only had a very awesome drum beat, still keeping their dark, mysterious vibes from before, but did not sacrifice their wicked good vocals, giving it to us just as good as when they began. Very nice ladies.
