"Boy Wonder" Reviewed (More Or Less)

Hipsters rejoice, the superhero movie of your dreams movie is as close as your PPV. Mike Morrissey's 2010 vigilante revenge saga is a must see, it's as simple as that.

When Sean Donovan (Caleb Steinmeyer) was nine years old, he sat in the backseat when his dad was pistol and his Mom shot dead on the mean streets of Brooklyn during a car jacking gone wrong.

Ten years later, Donovan has jumped off the deep end and has begun righting wrongs where women were specifically targeted. Meanwhile, a new detective (Zulay Henao) has a connection to his mother's murder and is threatened herself.

Caleb, fluid in Mandarin, a martial arms animal, crack shop, chemistry wiz, straight A student, should get out more. Whenever he does, he is killing pimps and beating up homeless people. I think. They use a form of slo mo so we can hear what sounds threatening to him but might not be. In a set piece he nearly kills three people at a teenage party for no good reason and… nothing. Nobody seems to notice. Bizarre. McGuffin abound and the you need to completely suspend disbelief. But if you can do that, he movie is relentless, dark, and not a little psychotic. I liked it a lot.

Musically, Bjork's "Human Behavior" plays on the soundtrack at one point; Boy Wonder's Mom was a classical music fiend with a taste for Bach, and Deerhunter plays from time to time.
