1. Brownsville Girl/Dansville Girl – Written with Sam Shepherd, and it is his greatest story song ever. A Western about a lost love as a rush of flashbacks as Dylan stands on line to see a Gregory Peck soot em up. The last line "Seems like a long time ago, long before the stars were torn down" is devastating and the original, I have it on the "Real Bootleg tapes" bootleg, is just as good and extremely illuminating if you're as obsessed with the song as I am.
2. When The Night Comes Falling From The Sky – Not the blues version on Empire Burlesque, the infinitely superior Heartbreakers one: a stampede of emotion and melody as a woman burns his love letters and he requests freedom from her: "And you'll get it to me now or I'll take it anyway".
3. The Groom Still Waiting At The Altar – Off his best Born Again album, and original not even that but a "B" Side. The extended allegory is theistic in nature though the landscape strange and Dylan-y.
4. 90 Miles Per Hour Down A Dead End Street – A really great version of the Hank Snow country song. Dylan stresses the lines and the instruments drop out and come back up to fill the spaces, and it is as if he is revving and stalling the engine. Off an album, Down In The Groove, considered his worst for some bizarre reason. Incidentally, music opinion can be do by covering other people's material. I include a song Zim didn't write himself for that exact reason.
5. I And I – When Zimmy is considered a genius it is because of a song like this: small and epic at the same time, a marvel of patience and momentum till it final discovers the epic in its own reflection. Rasta in tone, and just post-Born Again. Powerful.
6. Silvio – A staple of his live shows for a decade or so, you can hear why, it is all uplift and self-regard: a self-portrait where Dylan's ego is unmissable.
7. In The Summertime – Another song off Shot of Love. The only thing wrong with this song is the playing is a little trite. The song is a masterpiece of love for a woman and a God.
8. Emotionally Yours – The O'Jays got a hit off this lovely song which is exactly what it says it is. Disco Bob, right?
9. Foot Of Pride – On the neck of man. The God of wrath comes screaming down. Incidentally, on your list of best Dylan covers? Include Lou Reeds version of this.
10. Property Of Jesus – Yeah, I know, the third off Shot Of Love. I didn't say these lists were written in stone.
