Bitter Suburbia: Raina Leibowitz On American Idiot

The cast of “American idiots” performed the Green Day songs really well.
However for a Rock Opera, this is by no means “Tommy.” The dancing was horrible. I don’t know if it was the choreography or the actors themselves, but something stank and it wasn’t because the lead character in the play reminded the audience several times that he kept forgetting to take a shower.
On another note, there was so much teenage/early 20’s angst going on in the show I didn’t know what was more disturbing, the guy who headed to the big city and became a junkie or the guy who never got off his parents couch after getting his girlfriend pregnant. Ahhh, how proud those parents must be.
Seriously, I understand this is “Green Day” circa 2002-2003, but when did living in Suburbia cause kids to become so bitter?. I don’t know what bothered me more, the lives of the three main characters in the play or the over abundance of strobe lighting used in the performance.
However I do admit, my perspective now as a parent in 2010, raising a child in suburbia might be slightly askew.
My advice, if you love Green Day and are interested in the play-save some money and just buy the cast recording.
