Big Stars Big Care by Michael Nessing

On May 21 at Mercy Lounge in Nashville, KY, musicians paid tribute to seminal ‘70’s power pop group Big Star and Alex Chilton, who passed away earlier this year. The show was a benefit for Nashville flood victims put on by MusiCares, the musicians aid foundation.
The hastily arranged show featured Big Star co-founder Jody Stephens, My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel, Raconteurs’ Brendan Benson, Jason Moon Wilkins, Chris Stamey, Mitch Easter, The Shazam, and Box Tops guitarist Gary Talley. Powerful renditions of classic tracks from Big Star’s debut “#1 record” and the follow up “Radio City” made up the lions share of the evening’s musical buffet.
