Ari Upp, Johnny Rotten’s step daughter, and the leader of the punky reggae Slits has died at the age of 48 after a long illness.
At the age of fourteen, Ari Upp formed the all girl teen brand the Slits and within the very very pro-feminist punk movement was in big trouble for appearing topless and playing in mud.
Johnny married Ari’s Mom Nora and the band were one hit wonders but if you listen to “Typical Girls” today, the thirty-nine years since its release hasn’t aged it a second. More than just about any band of the period, this could just as easily be the Vivian Girls.
