There’s a massive amount of controversy surrounding Arctic Monkeys at the BRIT Awards. I didn’t watch them, but I saw their performance, and knew that they won Album Of The Year for “AM”. That record’s really grown on me and I adore the boys, and so I was confused as to what all the nonsense was about.
People seem to be incredibly upset at Alex Turner’s acceptance speech. However, it seems to be the cause of a great divide- some people say it was “so rock ’n’ roll and he’s a genius” and other people see him as “an arrogant wanker”.
His speech went like this: “That rock ‘n’roll, eh? That rock’n’roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, and sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands it adheres to some of its rules.
But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner. Ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock’n’roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it. “ However, the last bit seems to be what is raising the most issue. He then said, “invoice me for the microphone if you need to,” and dropped it. They then walked off stage.
Personally, it did come off as a bit arrogant and over the top. And scripted. But c’mon, these boys seriously deserve all the recognition they’ve gotten and i’m extremely proud of the.. Though their sound has changed and some people consider them sellouts, they’re still incredibly successful and I’m still a fan.
Watch it for yourself. Though he is a bit swarthy, it’s still a pretty good speech
