Today in 1978 The Blues Brothers first appeared on Saturday Night Live. Those were the 'good' days of the show when John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd ruled the night.
Jake and Elwood Blues. The comedians created this identity of 2 Chicago blues men. So in detail that a movie would follow just a couple years later.
I will say I really loved the Blues Brothers, Ackroyds silly silent act with harmonica to Belushi's madness (how did that guy flip like that) was great fun. The Blues Brothers got some great musicians together and even went so far as to record an album (which I owned).
Music and comedy have always gone together. Steve Martin and the banjo, Ricky Ricardo and the drum, Tiny Tim and the uke (though I am unsure if that was intentional comedy) all have a place in history. Parody songs? Same deal- that goes even further back.
The Blues Brothers actually gained credibility in the blues world. They sparked up interest in the genre and introduced it to the hipsters of the day. They brought in "Soul Man" and "Rubber Biscuit" and may be the sole reason Ray Ban is still in business.
So in honor of this anniversary I suggest we all put on our shades and pork pie hats and attempt that infamous Blues Brothers dance. You first.
