Iman Lababedi Says:
Once a proponent of No New York back in the day I retain a taste for the quirky, the off-beat, and the bent. Longtime readers may remember my tribute to the Lennon/Ono Life With The Lions. Americans In France isn’t quirky but it is definitely the work of artists (drummer Casey Cook painted the cover of the new Spider Bags album -I posted it yesterday). The aural swatches are so obtuse it can take awhile to hit you but the album was recorded on 8 track reel to reel and the distancing effective of an angular song like “Mean Serene” which is like the Velvet Undergound as teenage Spritualized fans, is warmed by a sound that closes you in around Josh Lajoie’s unpretty and very moving vocals. I will write more about the band as time goes by but I think it”ll end up one of my faves of the year. The official review will be Helen Bach once Ive stopped sending her the songs. Helen doesn’t much like Americans In France…
Helen Bach says:
