Alyson Camus’s Final Fantasy

Do you know Owen Pallett? He is going to open for Arcade Fire at the Madison Square Garden on August 4 and 5. As an accomplished violinist and composer, he has arranged tracks for them as well as for other bands like Beirut and Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner’s side project.

I have just downloaded his EP ‘Lewis Takes Off His Shirt’, which was offered for free at domino record:

The EP features ‘Lewis Takes Off His Shirt’ from his ‘Heartland’ album as well as 3 different remixes of the song by Dan Deacon, Benoît Pioulard and CFCF, and a remix of ‘Keep The Dog Quiet’ by Simon Bookish and another remix of ‘Midnight Directives’ by Max Tundra… so a lot of remixes.

I had never heard of him before and his song ‘Lewis Takes Off His Shirt’ is a symphonic experience with a constant repetitive electronic nervousness behind it, whereas his high pitch voice, which could be compared to that of a less nasal Rufus Wainwright, delivers ethereal vocals. These vocals start with a serene assurance, whereas the orchestration behind them, which reminds me some symphony of Philip Glass, blows up later with the violins.

I read that his music is largely influenced by his love of video games, to the point he first recorded under the name of Final Fantasy (a well-known video game series). I have not heard a lot of his music, but if I had to find a connection with video games, I would say they evoke both a certain complexity and involvement.
