Bobby Womack is one of the great soul men of the 20th century and after his cancer scare last year we are lucky he is still with us.In January of this year he announced he as Alzheimer’s disease so we are very very lucky that he will be playing three nights at City Winery and I am making my way down there on Friday. Assume too much from The Bravest Man In The Universe but there will be some trips Uptown to 110th Street.
Tuesday:
The Devil Wears Prada – Best Buy – The greatest hardcore Born Again Christian band of all time, I’ve consistently loved their work, even the live one, and I can’t wait to see em live.
John Mayer – Barclay Center – Tomas Doncker, who knows a thing or two about electric guitar, swears Mayer is a giant and I wonder if the word is “was” at best.
Kristeen Young – Bowery Electric – The closest we are going to get to Morrissey for awhile.
The 1975 – Webster Hall – Manchester latest greatest rock and roll band in the world!
Billy Gibbons – BB Kings – If ever there was a day you wish you could close yourself, this is it. Anton Fiig on drums.
Wednesday
Ja Rule – BB Kings – Irv Gotti, and an album away from the big time, he ended up in jail for possessing a weapon. Now he’s back… of course if they jailed every rapper who possessed a gun…
Thursday
Patty Smyth – Gramercy Theater – Still Scandalous
The Breeders – Webster Hall – They are performing Pod and Last Splash so this is the Breeders show to see
Saves The Day – Bowery Ballroom – Emo rules
Beyonce – Barclay Center – The new album is terrific, I wonder if she has had time to integrate some of the songs into the frankly iffy live show
Friday
The English Beat – Irving Plaza – Always a good show, usually play too long
Darlene Love – BB Kings – Sang “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”
Saturday
Cro-Mags – Assume the moshpit will still be a deadly cesspool of male testerone
Thievery Corporation – Webster Hall – I saw em opening for Massive Attack a coupla years back and they were awesome. I might weaken and turn to stub hub for this sold out show. If it wasn’t SRO there’d be no question.
The Dirty Pearls – Webster Hall – Excellent old time New York rock and roll band
Martin Rev – Bowery Electric – Half of Suicide
Sunday
Ronnie Spector – BB Kings – I saw her perform this Christmas party at the Bottom Line, and Joey Ramone sang with her. No, really!!!
Memphis Bleek – BB Kings – The Roc-A-Fella who didn’t break big.
