A Year Ago This Is What I was Listening To -by Iman Lababedi

A year ago and the past was a different country. Back from seeing my Mom in England for the first (and last -she died this summer) time in 30 years, I returned to discover I wasn’t as solvent as I thought I was. What followed were nine of the worst months of my life of which all I will share right now was the website was on life support.

And a year later? The website is still on life support but as I’ve told Alyson (and as I would guess anybody who writes with me knows), the only causes worth fighting (or writing ) for are the lost causes.

Me? I write more than I speak and listen to music more than both and a year ago this is what I was listening to.

1. Everybody Here’s – Brad Paisley – A fine second cousin to For Sale era Beatles.

2. Hey Baby – Falu – Cornershop in their wildest dreams can do this. Important crossover that didn’t crossover.

3. She Wolf – Shakira – Took me forever to warm up and when I did I got nailed by the crap album.

4. Haven’t Met You Yet – Michael buble – This song is so great it is still a hit. The future of the American standards is somewhere here.

5. Blue Skies – Noah And The Whales – It’s like the Shins for manic depressives.

6. Sea Of Heartbreak – Roseanne Cash – Bruce Springsteen hasn’t sound so good in years (and year and years)

7. Hotel Room Service – Pitbull – And so the legend begins.

8. The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future – Los Campesinos – The good old days, before we heard the entire album and it was enough for the mention of an eating disorder to make us dream.

9. Tigers In The Fire – Love Grenades – there is no reason why this band has broken.

10. Satellite Heart – Anya Marina – The only good song off Twilight 2 didn’t break her.

11. Jump Then Fall – Taylor Swift – And Taylor was still a country girl.

12. Free And Easy – Dierks Bentley – Stood up to Paisley at MSG

13. Meet Me Halfway – Black Eyed Peas – Fergie rules this song

14. The Ghost of Tom Joad – The best moment at the Hall of Fame gig was Morello’s solo on this song

15. Grito Mundial – Daddy Yankee – The horns are worth Grupo Mania. I mean the Grupo mania of the 1990s.

16. F.R.E.D.D.I.E – Freddie Gibbs – You go to sleep with pitchfork you wake unable to do this kinda stuff any more.

17. You Only Live Once – The Strokes – No idea why I was listening to this.

18. Alpha Dog – Fall Out Boy -Their last song? It sucked.

19. Beat It (Demo) – Michael jackson – Er, was dead. But we had hopes for the movie till we saw it.

20. Notion – Kings Of Leon – I couldn’t stand em even then.

21. Who Says – John Mayer – Please go away.

22. Hidaway – Karen O and the Kids – Great movie, good song, will help you raise happenning kids.

23. Bad Romance – Lady Gaga – Blah blah blah blah bllaaah ah

24. This is It – Michael Jackson – Remember that Dan Aquilante review…. Ha ha ha

25. Hell Of A Life – T.I. -recorded from jail and better than anything he threw up in 2010.

26. The Hollow Earth – Thom Yorke – Before he wasted everybodies time with Atoms For Peace, he nailed his first great song in a decade.

27. 3 – Brittney Spears – Why we still worship the Britt

28. Tower Of Song – Leonard Cohen -Highlight of the live set

29. Winter Wonderland – Bob Dylan – When is he gonna croak? Oh he is croaking.

30. When We Were Beautiful – Bon Jovi – Dya remember how they legalized pornography? The Supreme Court said it was up to the State to prove a pornographic image had no artistic merit. It couldn’t be done and pornography was de facto legalized. This song, however, has no artistic merit whatsoever. It is pornographic
