Back in the late 90s, I went to see, I think it was, New Edition at Radio City Musi Hall, and Aaliyah, riding the Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number album which hadn’t quite hit, was the first of three acts.
She slinked out on stage for 5 song set, maybe 20 minutes, stunningly beautiful and absolutely self-confident. The management didn’t open the curtains for her and she sang along with backing tapes and though the audience were a little ho hum, Aaliyah ACTED AS THOUGH she was the headliner.
At the end she pretended to duck inside the curtains before syaing: “Did I forget something?” and launching into … “Back And Forth”? I think.
I remember being impressed with her presence and sexiness on stage.
She comes to mind because I am going to see second generation Aaliyah’s tonight.
