Elliott Smith’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” Reviewed: Letting Something Go by Helen Bach

Until this week I had no idea who Elliott Smith was.

Up until yesterday I didn’t even know if the name Elliott had 1 or 2 t’s in it.

But today I heard him for the first time in “Somebody That I Used To Know”

A gorgeous voice and a sweet acoustic guitar but not a sappy wimp in anyway. An acoustic man, and let me tell you its not easy to do. Most softer vocaled males come off sounding like a dentists office or worse.

Smith has a warm lilt to his voice and I love the range.

What a beautiful song.

On a personal note, this week was a rough one for me. Not feeling well I think may have been partially self induced. A rough loss, and realization certainly turned it around. And Iman, as my guardian angel, apparently has sent me a song which has totally nailed it. Wow. A light bulb moment and the poor man has no clue of whats transpired.

Letting something go is the most difficult thing us humans have to do. We lament, we cry, we make ourselves ill.

We as a species just want the comfort of familiarity. There are times when you simply have to move one.

Smith beautifully states it:

“I watched you deal in a dying day
And throw a living past away
So you can be sure that you’re in control
You’re just somebody that I used to know
I know you don’t think you did me wrong
And I can’t stay this mad for long
Keeping ahold of what you just let go
You’re just somebody that I used to know”
Perfection.
