I am a huge Screaming Females fan, a huge fan of their lead singer Marissa Paternoster, a huge fan of their drummer good guy Jarrett Dougherty, and I firmly believe Don Giovanni Records is one of the best labels you can imagine.
So when I stumbled across an mp3, “Holy Hell”, for Marissa Paternoster’s new band Noun (which has Jarrett drumming), on Brooklynvegan I jumped on it. And have played it incessantly ever since.
There is a reason why Screaming Females is called Screaming Females but on “Holy Hell” Marissa’s attack is bluesier than her usual hard rock though no less impressive.
And while I have no idea who is behind the guitar break, it is a heavy metal break and it is pretty fucking riffaholic.
Noun are playing the Don Giovanni Presents concert April 24th and April 25th, at Mercury Lounge, as are Screaming Females (as are the reason I will probably leave Chapel Hill a day early: Modern Hut).
I really love the way these guys go about their business: I love the way every band is unique but everybody plays on everybody elses material. That is Marissa on Modern Hut’s “Heart” “Lous Street” (I know you haven’t heard it yet, you can youtube Heart” without Marissa but with anoher singer on it, just an fyi for when the born again folkie Joe Steinhardt gets around to releasing some stuff).
These are good guys making the best music in the world and “Holy Hell” raises it with all the self assurance of a world class vocalist. And it’s free on brooklynvegan.com so download it.
Me? I am Pronouns…
