Cindy Adams, the New York gossip columnist, has reported that David Bowie is unhappy with his upcoming album The Next day and back in the studio tinkering with it and it might not be ready by March 11th. According to Adams, who is very very well connected, there is nothing much wrong with the album and it seems to be like a monumental case of cold feet. After ten years, Bowie's nerves are unsettled and you can understand why though anyone who has released Heathen in his life, can’t be that worried about quality control.
I’ve been listening to “Where Are We Now?” on and off for nearly a week now and it still is too much of a downer but it isn’t bad song either. To claim it is better than anything he’s written since, I dunno “Battle Of Britain” is faint praise but real praise.
She also said David has been very ill which I guess, well yeah, when you are getting wheeled out of the oxygen tank and ending tours midsong very ill is certainly one of the things you were.
I dunno but my guess is The Next Day will be a solid, average album and yes, I bet it will be better than his last couple of albums. Also, if he decides to play New York you can bet it will the hottest ticket of the year. Still, performance anxiety would sure seem to go with the territory after a ten year break. I was talking to a friend who hasn't released an album in six years and he can't stop tweaking the damn thing when everybody knows it was absolutely finished two years ago.
Hopefully, wise minds will prevail because I can't think of a worse idea than Bowie missing his deadline.
