Amazing spring night took us out to the Oakdale Theater ‘Dome’ to see Devil Wears Prada. I need to express that the headliner of this tour is in fact Killswitch Engage. We aren’t big fans of theirs but we do love DWP. So that’s who we were there for.
The venue is a lovely old theater that at one time was an open air pavilion, since rehabbed to a quality venue with nice comfy chairs and carpet. They showcase everything from Broadway touring companies to Lord of the Dance to Avenged Sevenfold.. its a great venue.. trying something new.
They’ve opted to bolt shut the auditorium doors and put shows in the lobby. Acoustically not designed for this the sound takes a beating. But I can see this working in a way.. and it would certainly save on cleaning up fees after a show. None the less it felt strange.
I loved that DWPs Mike Hranika gave it a shout out saying .. ‘this is the first time we’ve ever played a lobby’
Doors at 7, first act 730 we arrived just near 8. Again, we only went for DWP.
Upon entry I felt as if I threshold over to 1982 hair metal. I’m not sure who was on stage.
If I closed my eyes they were musically very strong though the vocals were a bit ‘old’ sounding.
They did that hilarious hair swinging head banging! In sync with each other. I tried to video tape it cuz it was amazing to see and I felt like i was in a time capsule.
We did see only 2 songs, the band was very personable and appreciative. Two things like. Show appreciation.
After jockeying for position on the floor (its flat- so without the grading a line of vision is really impossible. I’m 5’5” but the Magpie is 5’1) I don’t think she saw much! After settling in I noticed that the Clash were playing, the sound system was so bass heavy and distorted it was tough to tell followed by Jay Z! and then…………kesha. WHAT!?? Can I not escape her?
But it didn’t matter, the crowd was fun. Weird but fun. I expected more adolescent boys. What I saw were more bikers…weird huh? Regardless the crowd was really cool. Which is rare at hardcore shows.
The Devil Wears Prada came on stage to thunder. The bass was so thick I could feel it in my throat. Thumping insanely the band came out like a rocket and didn’t falter once.
The energy was intoxicating and despite the most horrible sound system ever, they crashed it out like the pro’s they have become.
The crowd loved them, us included. Despite the blood and flying shoes and the fact that at one point I nearly had to tackle the Magpie to prevent her from being swept up, and the 40 year old drunk guy hitting on her, it was a unity of fans all there for the same good time.
This is the third time Ive seen DWP and each time they come out stronger and more confident.
Each time they come out and own the place. They deserve every accolade they get, anyone saying otherwise just doesnt ‘get it’.
