OK -I don’t care what comes up, I’m gonna review it….
Green Flower Street – Donald Fagen – Fagen (the most aptly named man in pop music history by the way) namechecks earlier in the Nightfly and pays it back in this jazz homage.
Wild is the Wind – David Bowie – So far over the top it is like a supercharged power ballad as coke induced paranoid biography. And he didn’t even fucking write it.
On A Slow Boat To China – Ella Fitzgerald – Ella with a stand up bass and piano, swings so right. You really gotta listen to that Twelve Nights album. The only person who scats better is Satchmo.
Can’t Stand me Now – The Libertines – It wasn’t that long ago but it sure feels like it was a golden age for rock groups.
Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most – Barbra Streisand – This woman has a voice and while the top will never be what it was, she sounds great with a quartet. Barbra’s control is aweinspiring but the song doesn’t do it for me.
Stop Me – Mark Ronson featuring Daniel Merriwether – The most pointless song on version by a long shot.
Raw – Gudda Gudda – My man!!! I’ve been planning to write about Guddaville for ages. I recognize the sample but can’t place it. My fave rapper not named Gibbs.
Balooshka – Kate Bush – Loved it at the same, but in 2010 a little too x chromosome for my tastes.
A Woman Is A Sometime Thing – Louis Amrstrong – From Ella and Louis’ great take on Porgy And Bess and the gold standard.
My Resistance Is Low – Hoagy Carmichael – Costello turned me on to this on his Kojak album. The way it swings up is infatuation as expressed musically.
You’re the Top – Louis Armstrong – When I say they don’t write songs like this anymore what I mean is they don’t write songs like THIS anymore.
She Was No Good – Elvis Costello – From his last album and it is a serious fucking drag.
Karma Police – Radiohead – There are two types of people in the world: folks who like this and folks who think it’s a tedious stupid whinging wretched piece of wank.
God Is God – Joan Baez – Whatta a voice. She needed Steve Earle like a hole in the head.
Written In Reverse – Spoon – Still hate the first line.
Mother’s of The Disappeared – U2 – OK, this post is over.
