Listen Up: 9-25-12

1. Rehab – Amy Winehouse – The classic update lyric with down home sound and that voice. When it was first released it was a great joke, today it aches with poignancy and warning – Grade: A

2. Basket Case – Green Day –  Listen to him whine or scream, as Billie Joe put, even if he had no real reason to do so, he's been doing this since 1988. A little respect, folks, after all he represented for Amy when she died  – Grade: A

3. Die In Your Arms – Justin Bieber – And poor Bieber got roped in as well. He's like the boy at the family table when the dad is shouting at the daughter and then turns around and says 'You as well…' to him – Grade: A

4. The Only Place – Best Place  – One more thing, if the Brooklyn gig gets cancelled in January I will be seriously pissed – Grade: A

5. No Myth – Michael Penn – Married to Aimee Mann since 1997… nice work if you can get it – Grade: B+

6. The Show Goes On – Lupe Fiasco – If he isn't the best rapper out there, nobody, except for Chuck D of course, is doing agit-prop half as well – Grade: B+

7. From Here On Out – The Killers – A fuzzy country rocker, less ambitious than usual but it absolutely hits its target – Grade: B+

8. Knife – Grizzly Bear – Haunted by its own ghost, it settles into a mood of quiet unease – Grade: B

9. The Sweetest Thing – U2 – This is the height of U2, it is relatively understated but Bono works the highest of his vocal range for added poignancy and it is simply beautiful – Grade: A

10. Every Road Leads Home To You – Richie Sambora – The second track off the newbie, is a bimbastic piece of bullshit which works because, you know, he's channelling Bruce – Grade: B
