Flourescent Adolescent: Mary Magpie "Voting and Politics"

(editors note; another installment of our free for all column allowing a glimpse into the teenaged world from our seasoned writers.  Too often we only see things from the adult perspective- heres a fresh look on a ancient issue)

Everyone pretends they know/care/are into politics; very few actually are.

My Facebook news feed is flooded with kids under 18 complaining about the government…wtf? The only things they know about politics have been pushed onto them by their guardians- their opinions are not their own. They're spewing nonsense, and it's pretty much pure humour. I hate how kids try and say that they're going to make a difference when they can't do jack.

By posting Facebook statuses and tweeting, it just shows that you are moderately interested in one of two things: a) politics, or, most likely b) looking like you know about politics. The complex system is not simply black and white (no pun intended). People vote for Obama 'cause he's black and can say pretty words and connects with the younger audience and tailors to minorities. Romney is a realist, but people are so concerned with the fact that he's a white, wealthy, Republican old man so his words are replaced with his appearance. It's not like either of them are really going to do much. The president is simply a figure head, a face for the country. It's not like he has total control over things- the people, and the branches have more power combined. It's an awkward power struggle people ignore because they're so concerned about who will be the dude's face they'll see on NBC for the next for years.

Politics are stupid. If you can't vote, shut up. And if you can vote, please don't be ignorant and vote for people because you think you know what they're saying- do some research.

Let's all become communists.
