Joe Steinhardt of Modern Hut and PhD of cool suggested Black Wine to Iman and I when we interviewd him last week. In the roar of madness I have not had opportunity to check them out until today. Categorized as ‘grunge/punk/pyschedelic’, I got a bit scared.
‘Couch Critic’ is first up on their myspace and it freakin kicks ASS. The vocals are raw and filthy and you sort of want to roll around in them til your a sloppy mess.
I love their ‘about Black Wine’ blurb:
“We were/are in other bands but now we’re in this one. Message us here or email at TheBlackWineBand at gmail for shows. and check out our fan page on facebook”
okedoke… will do!
“Haunted” sung by Taylor the female drummer sounds GREAT. Yes you heard me, great. This is stripped down basement punk. She has paid attention to the greats, her falsetto hits an almost B52’s tone, but rolls into a more Joan Jett comfort zone. Uh oh, this is rather amazing.
What I am learning her is not only Steinhardt a genius in his writing (and educational pursuits) but this dude knows music.
Black Wine will be taking part in the Mercury Lounge events, performing on April 25 and if you’re in the NYC area and don’t go, you’re an idiot. Theres really no other way to put it. If you have ever been a fan of raw filthy punk. I have a funny feeling Don Giovanni records is the Pied Piper and we should just shut up and follow.
