I posted before about this band, but wanted to write more in depth about them.
I first stumbled upon them when ITunes had one of their new tunes “New Moon Rising” as a one of their free weekly downloads. I instantly loved this tune.
The next week, I found their self titled debut album at the library and again, instantly took a liking to it.
The lead singer, Andrew Stockdale, sounds like a cross between the Beatles, Lenny Kravitz, & Axl Rose. This band definitely has a “classic rock” feel to them. When you first hear his voice, your first impression is ‘is this guy for real’, then after a few spins of their tunes you start loving what they are doing. The music is rock, metal, funk – just a mix of many genres of music.
Stockdale, who formed this Australian band, fired the band members from the first album and replaced them with all new members for the band second release “Cosmic Egg”. You could say that Stockdale is a one-man crew that whomever he has as his back-up band will still put out great quality work. Sorta like a modern-day Axl Rose.
These days, you can find Andrew Stockdale everywhere. Wolfmother is featured on the soundtrack for the new Alice In Wonderland movie with the song “Fell Down A Hole”, plus Stockdale appears on the first single from Slash’s upcoming solo album (review to follow once this one is out). The song on the Slash album is called “By the Sword”.
Some of my top picks from Wolfmother are “Far Away”, “In The Morning”, “New Moon Rising”, “Woman”, “Joker & The Thief”, “In The Castle”, “Violence of the Sun” and “Fell Down A Hole”.
Check them out. You won’t be disappointed.
