Listen Up: 7-30-12

1. Guardian – Alanis Morrisette – It's been a long long time since Alanis blew us all away with "Hands Clean", and this, while standard issue good as opposed to painful Alanis (though the chorus gets kinda close to please stop now level), isn't gonna change the perception. Still, it is nice to heard such devotion from the girl, and it should play well on stage – Grade: B

2. La Bonita – Mellowhype – A Mexican beat and sample is on heavy repeat and Hodgy spits out a smart flowing rap, though how his proto-sexist dribble attracts the Bonitas in question probably comes down to star power.

3. Ball Of Fire – The Orb – With Lee Scratch Perry and you can see the thinking: electronic doo-dahs plus bass and you might get something special. Or you might get this experimental stuff – Grade: B

4. F.E.B.N. – Trash Talk – Very average hardcore,  not bad mind, but Pissed Jeans would blow em off stage – Grade: B-

5. My Love Is Real – Divine Fits – Spoon go 80s. You decide – Grade: B-

6. Hall Of Fame (feat will I AM) – The Script – The drums are alright – Grade: C

7. See You In My Nightmares (feat Lil Wayne) – Kanye Wanna depress yourself? Listen to this and then listen to "Mercy" – Grade: A

8. Darker Shade Of Black – Inner Circle –  Dub meets dance, built around beats so skittish you gotta wonder what they are on a dub album, and and and…. "Norwegian Wood" – Grade: B+

9. Midnight Song – Wild Nothing – Sorry Tatum, but this sure sounds like a moment in indie time that is rapidly coming to an end – Grade:B

10. Seek It – Richard Hawley – He is like Scott Walker without the psychosis and with about half the talent. Huge in the UK, this is melodic but overwarmed – Grade: B
